International Conference " Protection of soils functions – challenges for the future" IUNG PIB Pulawy, 15-18 October 2013 organized within the PROFICIENCY project The Conference was organised by the IUNG Department of Soil Science, Erosion and Land Protection. The main objective of the conference was to discuss the problems and future challenges related to protection of main soils functions with particular emphasis on the topics such as : - methods to evaluate soil functions and soil value, - measures for soil protection against threats: erosion, compaction, loss of soil carbon, pollution acidification and loss of the biodiversity, - management and protection of soils of different use (agriculture, urban), - methodologies for risk assessment at local, regional and European level, - remediation of degraded soils, - field and policy measures for improvement of soil functions. The Conference, besides introductory part on general issues of the soil protection on European and national level, included four sessions focused on the main threats to particular soil functions. The programme of the Conference embraced over 37 oral presentations (including 11 key lectures presented by the highest grade EU specialists from The Netherlands, The UK, Austria, Russia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Poland) and 120 poster presentations. The best presentations of young participants were rewarded with diploma. Abstracts of all presentations are included in the Conference Materials (ISBN-978-83-7562-144-0) edited by the IUNG.
